Sitting in an 7 acre private estate Claughton House is a spectacular villa perched 25m above sea level overlooking a sweeping bay that stretches easterly for over 1km.
Designed by the great Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most celebrated architect & pioneer of the ‘Tropical Modernism’ movement, his ability to seamlessly blend traditional Sinhalese design, colonial stylings and modern open plan living has inspired many of today’s architects and designers ensuring his legacy lives on and continues to evolve.
Now regarded as having been one of the most important and influential Asian architects of the 20th century, Mr Bawa’s work is characterized by sensitivity to site and context. His work is instinctively, rather than self-consciously sustainable. His designs break the barriers between inside and outside, between buildings and landscape, and he characteristically links a complex series of spaces with distant vistas in a single scenographic composition.
Claughton House is a wonderful example of how this philosophy works so well.
The main house has 3 master suites with king beds, attached bathrooms & private gardens / courtyard. All these bedrooms have easterly views across the garden, pool, beach & ocean.
The two further suites are located at the rear of the house accessed through the kitchen & a covered walk way.
There is a stunning modern large infinity pool with seating, a shallow & deep area that has pool side dining, BBQ, and bar as well as sun deck.
Steps meander down the slope to the lower garden with a private access to the sandy beach. The ocean is used by local surf schools to teach beginners.
Claughton House comes with 2 Chefs & a full house keeping team.
