You will find plenty of luxury villas, high end restaurants, boutique shops and galleries near the iconic Dutch Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Go for an early walk on along the Ramparts to catch glimpses of stunning views of the Indian Ocean. The Dutch Hospital precinct is home to a number of luxury restaurants offering various cuisines. You can find a combination of Sri Lankan and western dishes at the Pedlar’s Inn café and restaurant. The paved streets of the fort are full of tile-roofed houses with verandas in the Dutch colonial style. Go for a stroll along the streets to drink in its old world charm and visit its boutique shops to buy jewellery, antiques and artisanal crafts.

The forest reserve is home to 20 endemic bird species of Sri Lanka as well as numerous other animals. The source for two of Sri Lanka’s main rivers, Kanneliya forest reserve is rich in waterways that create fertile grounds for many endemic plants to thrive.

South Sri Lanka Beaches

Unawatuna beach is approximately a 20 minute drive away from Galle. You can rent sun beds for the day on the beach and swim in the shallow waters. The west end of the beach provides access to a small hill and some stairs that reach up to a pagoda with a big Buddha statue. The view from the pagoda is charming and the walk up is not strenuous.  However, the beach tends to get crowded on some days. If you would prefer a less crowded beach go to Mirissa or nearby Bentota.
